Title: Working memory, cognitive training, and managed forgetting in
digital storage systems
Speaker: Prof. Robert H. Logie (University of Edinburgh, U. K.)
Abstract: Working memory refers to a range of different conceptual
models and approaches to understanding moment to moment cognition and
its contribution to remembering and learning. In this talk I will first
present my own version of the multiple component theoretical framework
for working memory This comprises a collection of domain specific
on-line processing resources and temporary memory systems that are
distinct from perception, and are distinct from, but draw on the
accumulated lifetime store of knowledge. Each working memory system has
its own characteristics and capacity limit, and different combinations
of these systems can be selected and operate in parallel according to
current task demands. Overall working memory capacity is thought to
comprise the total of the individual capacities of the systems that are
engaged for any given task. I will describe some experimental work using
virtual environments and internet data collection to illustrate how
complex and deman!
ding cognitive tasks engage most or all of the working memory systems,
and how this often leads to the widely held conclusion that there is a
single, overall attentional capacity limit for each individual. Recent
research has suggest that this capacity limit can be increased by some
forms of adaptive cognitive training. I will argue that cognitive
training effects are far from new and simply demonstrate a combination
of increased motivation and aspects of tasks becoming automated thereby
releasing existing capacity in one or more working memory components.
The talk will conclude with a discussion of the 'Information
Technology-Productivity Paradox' and recent research on addressing the
challenges to learning and working memory function from the enormous
amount of digitally stored information.

Title: Using Desktop virtual environments in cognitive psychological
research
Speaker: Matthew R. Logie (MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit,
Cambridge, U.K.)
Abstract: Software development is more accessible than ever before, for
both the creation and use of specialised environments that also provide
an efficient means of obtaining detailed data. I aim to demonstrate and
explore the potential of using such software environments traditionally
employed in the games industry to help examine the human mind.
