In this workshop, three presenters (Nick Enfield, Asifa Majid, and Mutsumi Imai) present research concerning the relation between language and thought from different perspectives and in different layers of linguistic and cognitive facilities, using different methodologies. Enfield approaches the problem by looking at the social aspects of language use and social cognition.  Majid discusses how actions are categorized linguistically across different languages and seeks for universally shared constraints on action perception and lexicalization. Imai explores how categorization of nominals by classifiers affects representation and cognitive processes of objects and present data from a series of cross-linguistic experiments.  The three talks in this workshop together offer how the relation between language and thought―one of the central issues in cognitive science―could be approached conceptually as well as methodologically.
