講演タイトル：Emotional Intelligence: A Critical Appraisal

講演要旨：
Emotional intelligence refers to abilities in perceiving, understanding　and regulating emotion. This new construct has important implications　for applied psychology. For example, assessment and training of　emotional intelligence may contribute to treatment of emotional problems　in the workplace and in education. However, popular enthusiasm for　emotional intelligence does not match the scientific evidence supporting　the construct and it's utility. Several areas of controversy will be　reviewed. It is difficult to conceptualize emotional intelligence　precisely, in relation to psychological theory of emotion. Various tests　of emotional intelligence have been developed but their validity and　convergence is questionable. It is also unclear whether tests of　emotional intelligence improve over existing ability and personality　measures in predicting behavioral criteria, such as speed and accuracy　of emotional processing. The predictive validity of emotional　intelligence in applied contexts also appears to be limited. In　conclusion, emotional intelligence is a promising new idea in　psychology, but its potential has yet to be confirmed in rigorous research.

情動知能とは，情動に気付き，理解，制御する際に関係する能力のことです。この新たな構成概念は，応用心理学にとって重要な示唆を含んでいます。例えば、情動知能のアセスメントとトレーニングは，仕事場において，また教育の場において生じる情動的な問題を取り扱っていく上での一助となっていくことでしょう。しかし，情動知能に対し，世間では強い関心が集まっていますが，（そこで説明されていることは），情動知能の構成概念や有用さを支持している科学的な証拠とは一致していません。いくつかの領域において展開されている論争が，再び検討されるでしょう。心理学における情動の理論と関連付けて，情動知能を厳密に概念化することは困難なことです。これまで，情動知能に関する様々なテストが開発されてきましたが，それらのテストの妥当性や収束性については疑問が残ります。同様に，情動知能のテストが，情動的処理の速さや正確さなど，行動を予測する判断基準として，既存の能力テストや人格テストに優るものであるかどうかに ついては明らかではありません。また，現実の文脈における情動知能の妥当性 についても，限界があるように思われます。つまり，情動知能は，心理学にお ける前途有望な新たなアイデアではありますが，そこに潜在している可能性 は，さらに精密な研究を経て確かめていかなければなりません。
